At one time, The Young and the Restless had a good thing going with Adam Newman and Sally Spectra. After both characters bounced around directionless for a few years, they finally found each other — and a dedicated fan base. Then, they broke up for an extremely ridiculous reason and it was all downhill from there.

Sally and Adam’s Breakup Had No Rhyme Or Reason

Adam (Mark Grossman) and Sally (Courtney Hope) seemed to be going along fine, but somehow Adam thought he could save Sally from being fired by his sister by breaking up with her. When Sally was fired anyway, Adam tried to win her back…and tried…and tried…and tried. But Sally wouldn’t budge. Sure, she didn’t want the split to begin with, but who knew she could be so unforgiving?

Adam certainly didn’t and was baffled that Sally refused to take him back. He was further baffled when she started dating his older brother, Nick (Joshua Morrow), a man whose daughter was once Sally’s age-appropriate rival. It seemed icky and weird for Sally to date Summer’s (Allison Lanier) father and even weirder when a one-night stand with Adam resulted in a pregnancy, but Sally chose to stay with Nick.

Sally and Adam agreed to be co-parents despite Adam wanting more, but sadly Sally’s baby was stillborn after pre-eclampsia caused a premature delivery. Adam told the doctors to save Sally’s life and not their daughter’s if necessary. When Sally woke, she blamed Adam for their baby’s death and tried to move forward with Nick. Things didn’t work out and now Sally finds herself single again, with Adam patiently waiting to officially reunite.

Too Little, Too Late For Sally And Adam?

While the above seems angsty and soapy, it all fell flat for two very good reasons. Sally and Nick just didn’t work together and it took way, way too long for the characters and the soap to realize that. The start of 2024 sees Adam and Sally tepidly trying again with a few chaste dates (after another one-night stand before the holidays), but the spark seems to be gone.

Was it the inexplicable breakup? Was it her sleeping with his brother while pregnant with Adam’s child? We’re not sure where things went off the rails completely, but Y&R may have waited too long to reunite a couple that broke up way too soon to begin with. Perhaps the right plot can get things going again for Sally and Adam, but if it doesn’t, it might seem time for these two characters to just move on.
