Soap viewers are used to stand-alone episodes featuring one specific character, but this is the first time The Young and the Restless fans have watched an entire episode only focusing on two characters. The relapse of Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) and Jack kept fans glued to their screens as they witnessed the emotional rollercoaster. Now, Peter Bergman is speaking out about this incredibly special episode.
Hitting Rock Bottom…Together
Peter Bergman touched base with TVInsider to discuss the show. “It is pretty special. A lot was asked of us, and hopefully, it comes through. It’s a really solid idea, and the idea behind it is, ‘How far are you willing to go to help someone?’ And Jack’s more determined than we knew.” He also touched on this being labor-intensive, “I was eager to get that script. There’s an assumption, ‘Peter can learn anything. He’s so good about knowing his lines.’ Oh my God, I think it was 49 pages long.”
As far as Jack’s intervening and trying to save Nikki from her demons, Bergman gave an interesting answer. “This is a desperate attempt on Jack’s part to help Nikki and it has history,” he told the publication. “When they were married [from 1990-1994], she fell into the bottle and Jack was an enabler. He was not the right person for her at that time, and he never forgave himself for that. So to have a second chance, Jack takes it crazy-serious, to the point that it’s now affecting his marriage and Jack’s dropping things to run to Nikki and there’s a real story behind that.”
For his efforts, Jack will face serious consequences. Not only does his character relapse, too, but poor Jack suffers greatly from his doping. Bergman hinted there “will have repercussions for a lot of people. A lot of people.”
