For Sharon Case, the third time really was the charm. The actress had two previous soap operas (As the World Turns and General Hospital) to her credit by the time she essayed the role of Sharon Newman (or Sharon Collins as she was then) on September 7, 1994, becoming the third actress on The Young and the Restless to do so (Monica Potter originated the part and was swiftly canned while Heidi Mark faired hardly better).
Sharon Case’s Tenure As Y&R’s Sharon
By the time Case debuted on the canvas, Sharon, “the troubled teen from the wrong side of the tracks,” was already embroiled in a love quagmire: Sharon loved Newman scion Nicholas (Joshua Morrow) but he was enamored of Amy Wilson (Julianne Morris), so Sharon caved into the amorous advances of ne’er-do-well Matt Clark who’d go on to expose her teenage motherhood and brutally rape her.
In the decades that followed Case’s alter-ego was felled by all manner of perils and medical maladies — breast cancer, kleptomania, bipolar disorder, the devastating loss of her firstborn, her third born ripped from her arms and given to another, her assault at the hands of a man she was presumed to have killed who returned to gaslight her for kicks — and courted by a plethora of dashing men (from Morrow to Don Diamont and Eric Braeden to a vast number of Adam Newmans).
ICYMI: SHARON CASE WAS OUR WOMAN CRUSH WEDNESDAY!
For her efforts, the actress has earned several award nominations and walked away with one Daytime Emmy Award: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1999. Case has also received copious praise from within the soap opera community and has become firmly entrenched as an audience favorite.
