Connor’s (Judah Mackey) OCD storyline is a hot topic in The Young and the Restless fandom, which was exactly the intent of the show’s executive producer Josh Griffith. For him, this was all about art imitating life with real issues people face on a daily basis.
Josh Griffith Speaks Out
Josh Griffith opened up to TVLine about the response to the story. “We’ve gotten emails, and we’ve seen social media posts where [viewers] have said, ‘Now I have a name for it, now I understand what’s going on with my loved one.’ That was really the biggest goal for me — to be able to show this to people so that they go, ‘Now I know what I’m dealing with,’ and know what to do moving forward.”
As it turns out, this is a topic that also hits close to home for Griffith. His daughter suffered for years with the disorder before finally being diagnosed with OCD at 26 years old. “It was really important to me, because there’s been such a misunderstanding of what OCD is — it’s often the brunt of a joke, ‘Oh, my OCD is acting up today!’ — when it’s so much more complex and terrifying than that.”
He went on to share his unique perspective, “I had firsthand experience I was drawing from, so it was gratifying to get feedback from them saying, ‘This is very realistic.’ And I’m like, I know, I’ve lived it.”
