David Lynch, the wild-haired, singular-imaginative who conceived such seminal pictures as Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire, and Mulholland Drive has died. He was 78.
Daily Drama News: David Lynch, RIP
Lynch’s passing was confirmed by his family via Facebook. They wrote in part: “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.’”
A true Renaissance man (he was a writer, director, actor, musician, voice-over artist, painter, published author, and practitioner of Transcendental Meditation), Lynch (briefly) pivoted to television in the early 1990s to co-create Twin Peaks for ABC.
The surreal sudser opened with the discovery of the corpse of the titular town’s homecoming queen, blue but still beautiful, swaddled in plastic, and followed FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper’s (Kyle MacLachlan) investigation of the crime hampered by all matter of kooky locals, even kookier superiors (including Lynch’s hard of hearing Gordon Cole), and supernatural goings on.
By 2024, a lifetime of smoking had left Lynch “homebound whether I like it or not.” He later elaborated on X: “Ladies and Gentlemen, Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking… I have now quit smoking for over two years. Recently I had many tests and the good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema. I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire. I want you all to know that I really appreciate your concern.”
