Out with the old and in with the new. Two years after The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) retired the Daytime Emmy Awards’ ‘Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series’ category comes word that the governing body is adding a new one: ‘Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama Series.’
Daily Drama News: New Daytime Emmy Award Category
In an interview with TVInsider, Rachel Schwartz, Head of Daytime and Children & Family Emmy® Awards, detailed that said category would be “specifically for people who are on their first daytime contract, so there is not necessarily an age parameter with it.”
While contract status isn’t a requirement, any prospective entrants “need to have a speaking role, and..need to have at least one continuous story arc in order to be eligible.” What’s more, “There will be a limitation that you can enter the category for the first 2 years that you are on the program, and then at that point you’re no longer going to be considered “emerging,” and you also, if you win the category, then you can no longer enter it as well.
One of the impetuses for the category’s creation was a what, rather than a who, three-time Daytime Emmy-winner Helen Gallagher (ex-Maeve Ryan, Ryan’s Hope) to be specific. Said Schwartz: “Before she started there, Helen was already a two-time Tony Award winner and was well-known to New York theater audiences. She then transitioned to becoming a very well-known, well-respected daytime performer.”
As to where the beloved awards show will air, Schwartz revealed that the Academy had yet to finalize deals with a broadcasting partner.
