Daytime dial hopper Sydney Penny (ex-Julia Santos Keefer, All My Children; ex-Samantha Kelly, The Bold and the Beautiful et al.) announced on Facebook that her husband, artist Robert Powers, died on December 31, 2024, a mere one day shy of his 60th birthday.

She wrote: “I’m heartbroken to have to share the news that my husband of 29 years, Robert L Powers, passed away early in the morning on New Year’s Eve. He hadn’t widely shared that he had been fighting cancer for several months, so I know this will be a surprise to many. He loved seeing all of your activities here on FB and I know he would want you to speed through your sadness and shock and continue to celebrate life as he always did.”
The couple met behind-the-scenes at Santa Barbara where Penny played traumatized BJ Waner and he toiled as a production assistant. The two got engaged on Christmas Eve, 1994 and were married on September 30, 1995. Their family grew with the addtion of son Chasen August on May 31, 2007.

* Jobbing character actress Grace Van Dam died following a recurrence of cancer on December 19. She was 96. Among her more than 140 credits are roles in Dark Shadows, Days of our Lives, and Knots Landing, but she’ll probably always be remembered as the trigger for Jan Brady’s infamous “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” rant.
* John Capodice, who appeared in a plethora of daytime and primetime soap operas during his long and varied career, passed away on December 30 at the age of 83.
The actor, who might be best remembered for his work as a commercial pitchman — he played a persnickety pizzeria proprietor in an ad for Polly-O String Cheese and shilled Dimetapp Cold Medicine — got his start via a six-episode run in Ryan’s Hope. He subsequently played Luigi in Another World, Dr. Angelo Antinucci in As The World Turns, and he originated the role of Carmine Cerullo in General Hospital.
