Judith Chapman has charmed daytime fans since she walked onto the set of As the World Turns as Natalie Bannon Hughes. She went on to bedevil Ryan’s Hope devotees as wicked Charlotte, and later shocked fans as Ginny Blake Webber on General Hospital. From there, she stole the show as Gloria on The Young and the Restless, and recently had jaws on the floor in her most recent appearance as Diana on Days of our Lives. She’s a living legend and we were lucky enough to get the scoop on her life off the small screen.
Judith Chapman Cements Her Legacy!
We recently spoke to Judith Chapman about what her life is like when she’s not wowing the daytime throng. She dished about her travels, her spiritual healing, her latest visit to Salem, and her fabulous passion projects set to hit the stage later this year!
First and foremost, we need to talk about Judith’s latest scenes with Greg Rikaart on DAYS. Poor Leo went to visit his wayward mama behind bars and the pair lit the stage on fire! The explosive scenes were raw, emotional, and had everyone’s jaws on the floor. “I love working with Greg,” Chapman began. “They sent me the script and I thought, oh my, this is good stuff! I didn’t want to change a word.
“When Greg and I saw each other we just hugged and worked on the scenes all morning. When it was time, we nailed those scenes. I think we only did one take. It was so dramatic and it was such powerful work. At the end of it, when they said cut, Greg and I just instinctively held onto each other and everyone was applauding. If I never have the opportunity to be on film again, I’m very proud if that’s the last thing I’ll ever do.”
Will those scenes be submitted for a Daytime Emmy? Oh, you bet! “I haven’t submitted things for several years,” she explains. “My agent got access to the scenes and said it was by far the most phenomenal work she’s ever seen. But, yes, I will be submitting those scenes.”
Straight off the high of filming such immaculate material, Judith Chapman didn’t take much downtime. Since then, she’s begun directing not one but TWO plays that will run at the exact same time. The first goes hand in hand with her environmental activism and brings awareness to how humans are treating the world. “The whole world used to be Eden and now it’s just here. This is my statement on saving Mother Earth,” says Judith. “Sundew is about this crazy old lady who lives on a mountaintop in the Appalachians and she won’t sell her land to the big mining company.”
The other play is just as powerful and deals with how humans treat each other. “Shunned is based on an Amish family,” Judith shares. “The Shunning is being cast out of the society and people who are called abominations because they’re part of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s about our prejudices whether we realize it or not.”
Putting on two shows at once is a great feat, but one Chapman is looking forward to. “This is my magnum opus. My great work,” she boasts proudly. “Hopefully, I will not fall on my face, but I cast them brilliantly. This is all very special” The shows will run on the same two weekends and will alternate nights starting on October 4th at the Palm Canyon Theatre in Palm Springs. For dates and tickets, click here!
For those who get the chance to attend, much of the artwork used is Judith Chapman’s very own. “I took all these photographs in Ireland of the countryside and these wonderful rolling green hills as you’ve seen and these beautiful whitewashed farmhouses, I said, oh, it looks like an Amish rolling countryside. And then, these old beat-up shacks that will be the old lady who lives on top of the mountain.”
Ireland, Judith fondly says is her spiritual home. “I just love it there. I call it my spiritual home because I did so much emotional healing and processing,” Chapman expresses. “I’ve lived in England and a few other places in Europe, but Ireland has something special.”
As far as coming back to daytime, Judith is always open to taking the call. And, more than anything, she thanks the fans for loving her work and giving her the freedom to act, be an activist, and live out her dreams.
