Baby switches are to soap operas what oxygen is to breathing on soaps. Sometimes your favorite soap will get it right and sometimes it gets it oh-so-wrong. That is exactly what is happening on Days of Our Lives with Nicole’s latest baby switch drama. We know it was the only baby switch in 2023, but it’s such a poorly constructed one that it’s earned the distinction as one of the dumbest EVER.
The Tables Are Turned On Nicole
There was a time when Nicole (Arianne Zucker) was a baby switcher herself, allowing Sami (Alison Sweeney) to believe her baby had died and taking little Sydney for herself to raise with EJ (Daniel Feurriegel). This time, Nicole is the victim after finally giving birth to a healthy child. Nicole’s struggles with carrying a baby to term are legendary on DAYS, with daughter Holly (Ashley Puzemis) being born via surrogate Chloe Lane (Nadia Bjorlin).
This is the first time Nicole has actually given birth to a baby who lived, but most of Salem thinks the little boy is now dead. Nicole knows in her heart that her baby is alive and with Eric (Greg Vaughan) and Sloan (Jessica Serfaty), but proving it seems to be easier said than done.
A DNA test showed that EJ is not a match, but they didn’t test Nicole’s DNA and Nicole seems to want to leave it at that, which doesn’t make sense. Then again, that’s just a long list of things in this story that makes zero sense.
Eric Questions Nothing
Does former priest Eric know so little about how the world works that he thinks storks named Melinda Trask (Tina Huang) just deliver babies to your doorstep with no legal paperwork, no background, no information about the birth parents, the lawyer who helped broker the deal — like literally nothing?
How does Eric think this adoption is even legal when he and Sloan were just handed a baby out of nowhere who is a little extra small and born the same night that Nicole’s extra small baby was born? How does he not question this at all, knowing Nicole insists this baby and her baby are one and the same?
Isn’t it just a little too coincidental that a strange doctor appeared out of nowhere to tell EJ and Nicole their baby died — and ooops — he was accidentally cremated so they can’t say goodbye to their son? Nothing seems fishy about that. They didn’t question Kayla (Mary Beth Evans), who runs the hospital, to see if this was true? What?
Both Eric and Nicole also know that doctoring DNA tests are a common Salem occurrence and Sloan even confessed to trying to do that already. Why does it not occur to Nicole that maybe the baby’s final DNA tests were switched and that’s why EJ’s DNA does not match the baby Eric is “adopting”?
Why Is Sloan So Useful?
We also do not understand why Dimitri (Peter Porte) and Leo (Greg Rikaart) don’t just tell the truth, but Leo at least made an attempt. He tried to tell EJ nad Nicole their son was alive, but EJ especially refused to listen and punched Leo in the face for his efforts. He then went back to Dimitri’s plan — blackmail Sloan into…being their lawyer?
Are we to believe there is no other lawyer in Salem who can help Leo and Dimitri that these two men wouldn’t just tell the DA that the child he thinks of as his son was alive? Wouldn’t that help them out of their jam more than more illegal actions?
Make is make sense, DAYS, because so far this story doesn’t. In fact, it has so many holes at the moment it can compete with Swiss cheese.
