When Jagger returned to Port Charles on February 2, he was looking decidedly…different. And going by his given name, so that was new too. In an exclusive chat with Soap Opera Digest, primetime TV vet Adam J. Harrington sounded off on joining the ABC sudser.
Adam Harrington Is The New Jagger
Harrington initially caught the casting director’s eye when he read for another part in October 2023. Remembers the actor, “When I went in for that, it was straight to a chemistry read with Laura Wright [Carly]. They let me know fairly quickly that that it wasn’t going to go my way, but to hold tight. And then they called again and they, “We’d love to have you on the show,” and then they let me know who I was playing. So, I kind of got hired, and then I found out I was playing John.”
Harrington quickly got to work on brushing up on his new alter-ego. A big takeaway? He didn’t exactly favor original portrayer Antonio Sabato Jr. — so, of course, he had to reconcile that fact. “My take on it,” he told the publication, “was that it’s been 30 years; they obviously wanted to take this in a new direction and see what they could do with this storyline. And I also thought, “There is no way I can even touch what Antonio Sabato, Jr. did with the role in the past.”
Though a seasoned acting pro (his credits include guest and starring stints on Da Vinci’s Inquest, Queer as Folk, Smallville, The Secret Circle, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Bosch) Harrington was thrown into the sudsy deep end, what with having “120 pages to shoot on the first three days.” Luckily, he was able to internalize the struggle and deepen John’s characterization:
“[John’s] kind of on home turf, but not on home turf; he is coming in with a job to do that he has to focus on, and yet, it’s like anybody going back to a place that has mixed memories — you’re kind of thrown off your game a bit at first. So, I just kind of took what was actually happening for me [as a newcomer to the show], and just thought, “This is probably how he’s feeling, too.”
