Actor, author, and businessman Malachy McCourt, probably best known for his fourteen-year tenure as Ryan’s Hope‘s beloved barkeep Kevin MacGuinness, passed away on March 11 at the age of 92. His wife, Diana McCourt, confirmed the news to the New York Times.
Malachy McCourt — R.I.P.
Though an Irishman through and through, McCourt was born in Brooklyn, New York just prior to the family’s relocation to Limerick. His impoverished childhood proved fodder for his late brother Frank’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, as well as McCourt’s own autobiographies, Monk Swimming and Singing My Him Song.
In addition to his role on RH, McCourt appeared in several New York-based soaps: Search for Tomorrow (concurrent to his run as Kevin), Another World, One Life to Live, and All My Children (where he played sage, seemingly omnipotent Father Clarence). The actor also starred in a plethora of stage shows, big screen flicks, and primetime programs including The Molly Maguires (1970), Q (1982), Brewster’s Millions (1985), Tales from the Darkside (as Dr Stillman in the episode Ursu Minor), and HBO’s OZ (where he recurred as Father Daniel Meehan).
McCourt is survived by wife Diana, daughter Siobhan, sons Malachy, Jr., Conor, and Cormac, stepdaughter Nina, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
