This week, The Young and the Restless will see the normally fractious Abbotts united in their desire to confront Ashley about her escalating mental health crisis.
Eileen Davidson On Ashley’s Struggles
“It’s almost like an exorcism,” Ashley’s portrayer, Eileen Davidson, tells TODAY journalist Chrissy Callahan, “because as they’re peeling back the layers, trying to find out what’s going on, it’s like she’s reacting to that, almost like she’s having water thrown on an evil spirit.”
Unbeknownst to her siblings, Ashley has developed multiple personalities, AKA alters, and the trio — Ms. Abbott, Ash, and an as yet to be monikered third — won’t take too kindly to their interference.
Relays Davidson: “[One of them is] really striking hard and she’s mean. She goes for the jugular and starts bringing up how [Jack and Traci are] saying these things about her because they’re jealous of her and how they’re bitter because she was their father’s favorite. She really gets down and dirty. It’s going to be stuff that the audience has never seen.”
While viewers are no doubt chomping at the bit for details as to the alters creation, easy answers will not be forthcoming in the near future — and it turns out Davidson is as much in the dark as her fans.
“I assumed it was the fight [with ex-husband Tucker McCall (Trevor St. John)] and I assumed it was the car accident, but I think there’s something greater. I think something more traumatic was the trigger,” the actress details. “She was already vulnerable because of what happened with Tucker, and she’s always been really, really, really lousy in relationships. It’s her Achilles.”
Whatever the case, Davidson hopes that the storyline will not only be entertaining, but educational as well: “The fact that we’re showing this [could make] people more open to going to therapy or having it be a topic of conversation. However, it’s brought up, I think transparency is everything, and if I can be a tiny, tiny piece of that while entertaining, it’s a gift.”
As for the present, well, Davidson insists that she’s “living the dream right now with this character.” And what more could she want?
