Oscar Predictions 2027: Telluride’s ‘Wild Horse Nine’ Gallops Ahead, TIFF Prepares Its Play

And just like that, another awards season has sprung to life, kicking off with the intimate whispers of Telluride and now bracing for the full-throated roar of the Toronto International Film Festival. The early skirmishes for the 2027 Best Picture Oscar are already underway, and if the buzz from the Colorado mountains is any indication, we have a dark horse – or rather, a wild horse – making an unexpected dash for the front.

This year, the film sending seismic tremors through the industry is Searchlight Pictures’ gritty, emotionally resonant drama, Wild Horse Nine. Directed by indie darling Elara Vance (whose previous work, 2022’s critically acclaimed Dust Devil Dreams, put her squarely on Hollywood’s radar), the film features career-best performances from an unlikely, yet utterly compelling, duo: Steve Buscemi and Sam Rockwell.

Telluride’s Unanimous Roar for ‘Wild Horse Nine’

Telluride, known for its discerning audience and its track record of launching eventual Best Picture winners like Nomadland and Moonlight, proved to be the perfect crucible for Wild Horse Nine. The film, set against the stark, beautiful backdrop of rural America, tells the story of two aging, estranged brothers (Buscemi and Rockwell) forced to reconnect after a family tragedy threatens to dismantle their last remaining tie to a fading way of life. It’s a raw, unflinching look at brotherhood, regret, and the fight for dignity in a world that’s often forgotten its quiet corners.

Industry insiders emerging from Telluride were practically buzzing. “It’s a masterclass in character study,” one veteran awards strategist told DailyDrama.com, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Buscemi, who we often see in brilliant supporting roles, is given the space to truly lead here, and he delivers a performance of incredible depth. Rockwell is, predictably, electric. Together, they’re dynamite.”

Searchlight Pictures, with its enviable history of shepherding prestige dramas to Oscar glory (think The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and more recently, Poor Things), seems to have another strong contender on its hands. Their strategy of a quiet Telluride debut before a wider festival push speaks volumes about their confidence in Vance’s vision and the film’s undeniable emotional punch.

TIFF’s Incoming Wave: Crowd-Pleasers and International Gems

While Telluride tends to favor the critically adored, Toronto often broadens the playing field, introducing a diverse slate that can include everything from heartwarming crowd-pleasers to groundbreaking international cinema. TIFF is where the wider audience often gets its first taste of potential Oscar contenders, and its People’s Choice Award is a historically strong indicator of Best Picture viability (Belfast, Green Book, CODA).

This year, Toronto is reportedly lining up several heavy hitters designed to capture the hearts and minds of a more expansive audience. Early whispers suggest strong potential for:

  • The Golden Thread (A24): A poignant, multi-generational drama directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Phoebe Davies, starring Olivia Colman and Riz Ahmed. It’s rumored to be a sweeping narrative about family legacies and resilience, a perfect fit for TIFF’s emotional resonance sweet spot.
  • City of Echoes (Warner Bros.): A star-studded, timely thriller from director Kaito Nakamura, featuring Anya Taylor-Joy and Oscar Isaac. While genre films often struggle for Best Picture nods, TIFF has a history of elevating well-crafted, thought-provoking thrillers that resonate beyond their initial classification.
  • A Perfect Season (Netflix): An uplifting sports drama starring Sterling K. Brown, following an underdog high school basketball team. Netflix has been aggressive in its awards campaigns, and a feel-good story with strong performances could be a surprising dark horse.

“Toronto is where you really see if a film has legs beyond the cinephile circuit,” noted a veteran festival programmer. “Wild Horse Nine is undeniable art, but TIFF will show us which films can connect with a broader emotional spectrum and build that crucial momentum for a long campaign.”

Performance Powerhouses and Shifting Narratives

Beyond Best Picture, the performances in Wild Horse Nine have ignited the acting races. Steve Buscemi’s quiet intensity and raw vulnerability are already generating significant Best Actor buzz, marking a potential first Oscar nomination for the beloved character actor. Sam Rockwell, already an Academy Award winner, proves he’s still got plenty of surprises up his sleeve, delivering a performance that’s both volatile and deeply empathetic.

The early festival circuit is less about declaring a winner and more about establishing narratives. Telluride has gifted us with a compelling narrative of artistic triumph and unexpected breakouts. Now, TIFF stands poised to either reinforce that narrative or introduce new, equally compelling stories that will vie for the Academy’s attention.

What’s Next for the Oscar Race?

As the industry descends upon Toronto, the conversation will shift from the hushed appreciation of Telluride to the more boisterous debates of a larger, more diverse festival. The coming weeks will reveal which films from TIFF manage to break through the noise and establish themselves as serious contenders. From there, the road winds through New York, London, and AFI Fest, each stop further refining the narrative until the nominations are finally locked in. One thing is clear: the 2027 Oscar race has started with a captivating gallop, and we’re in for a wild ride.
