Though Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) unprovoked attack on Dex (Evan Hoffer) certainly made for juicy fodder, many a General Hospital was turned off by the violent story swerve.
Maurice Benard Backs Up GH
One in particular took to X and vented, “[Maurice Benard] People off their medications don’t necessarily go around hitting people and being out of control. This was the WRONG message to send. I don’t expect anything from [Frank Valentini, GH’s executive producer] [and GH] anymore, but you could’ve (and should’ve) stopped it cold.”
To that, leading man Benard responded: “This is true but when you have a character like Sonny who’s volatile and is drinking and is manic and his thoughts are taken him over it could definitely happen like I said, bipolar ain’t pretty.”

To another fan who inquired in part, “Why does he have to hate Jason and Carly. The two people who always help him?” he proffered, “I don’t think he’s still gotten over them getting married and the ugly part about being manic is that’s when stuff comes out that’s deep deep inside.”
