After GH aired its primetime special, General Hospital: Sixty Years Of Stars and Storytelling, on January 4 in which Steve Burton appeared at the end hinting that Jason is back, Burton confirmed the big news on The Daily Drama Podcast.
As Bradford showed his joy at having his friend back on the soap, Steve noted that some people might be sad, and some might be celebrating. Bradford said he sees the same when a Spinelli appearance is announced.
Burton explained that it was hard to keep his return hush-hush since he had to tape the segment for the special, but got choked up when he described his experience being back on the lot.
Burton Addresses His GH Exit And Return
Steve is happy that he’s been able to get to a place of gratitude after recent ups and downs in life. He goes on discuss online comments after the news broke that he left Days of Our Lives and the role of Harris Michaels. After being in the soap biz for 30 years, he has learned not to “give power to comments.”
Since some fans have questioned how he could go back to GH after the circumstances in which he left in 2021, Burton was upfront. Disney had a vaccine mandate. He chose not to get the COVID vaccine, so they parted ways and he “didn’t have any hard feelings” or “ill will,” which he made clear in the exit video he posted to Instagram at the time.
Beyond Acting
Steve goes on to talk about his career and what it’s given him and is not sure how many more years he might have as an actor, but he also wants to do other things. Since there is no more vaccine mandate, he knows he wants to finish his career at GH as Jason Morgan. He is also happy to be able to go back for the fans who’ve been there throughout his time at GH.
Beyond Salem And In Salem
Steve and Bradford also discuss Steve’s last year reprising Harris, the character he began playing as a teen back in 1988. It was emotional to go back because he remembered his dad driving him to the studio when he was younger.
He loved doing the Beyond Salem mini-series and was thrilled to be offered a job on the regular show when DAYS moved to Peacock. He’s happy to be in his 50s and still working, calling his DAYS experience a “gift.”
Back At GH
Steve’s excited to get back to work as Jason and has been in communication with Evan Hofer who plays Dex, Sonny’s young mob enforcer who seemed to take Jason’s place for a bit by Sonny’s side.
He has no idea what Jason’s storyline will entail nor does he know his start date, but Steve is ready whenever the time comes.
However, he was in contact with wardrobe for the primetime special and told them to “just give me the jacket” as Jason is known for his black t-shirts and leather jackets.
Bradford jokingly asks which character Steve is ready to hug as Jason — Sonny or Spinelli. Steve sweetly says he can’t wait to hug his mother, or rather Jason’s mother Monica.
Jason’s Next Chapter
As fans know, Jason was presumed dead after being buried beneath the rubble after an explosion on Cassadine Island. Jason’s last return was epic as he burst through a skylight at the Metro Court, so Steve jokes he should ride a motorcycle right through Sonny’s wall for this return.
Of course, that is reminiscent of the time Jason Quartermaine became Jason Morgan and drove his bike through the Q living room doors. Bradford jokes that Jason’s kids are growing up so maybe he will be Grandpa Jason soon, an idea that Steve nixes.
Steve looks forward to finding out and playing what’s happened to Jason during the last two years, but he hasn’t seen any scripts yet so he doesn’t know.
A Thanks To Fans
In the end, Steve is grateful to his fans who keep tuning in no matter what soap he is on. He notes that the reason he and Bradford love touring the country with their comedy show is getting to meet dedicated fans. He points out that soap fans are different because the love of the genre is passed down through generations and they sometimes get to meet multiple generations of fans.
