Introducing Adam Huss
Adam Huss has been playing Nikolas Cassadine in General Hospital off and on since late 2022 and talks about his journey from pinch-hit Nik to the real deal. He joins Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson from his living room on The Daily Drama Podcast.
They begin discussing his love for horror flicks thanks to the poster from Creature From The Black Lagoon behind him. Adam says his favorite horror film is Evil Dead, but he also loves the Scream series. He has also been in several indie horror movies and produces his own horror projects.
Adam Huss’s Introduction To General Hospital
Adam had tested for the role of Nikolas back in 2018 when Marcus Coloma got the role, but filled in for the actor at the end of 2022 and then in early 2023 to wrap up Nik’s storyline. He had also tested for the role of Shiloh the year before.
He had known who everyone was on GH because the show has been such a large part of pop culture so he was ready to join the show. He even realized he was testing for Nikolas despite the character’s name not being in his audition sides.
When he was called in to sub for Coloma he was made to feel at ease right away thanks to Maura West (Ava) and the humor of Kin Shriner (Scott).
Attacked By Bees On B&B
Of course, GH is not Adam’s first soap. He appeared on several episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful with Kimberlin Brown. He played one of Sheila’s long-ago murder victims, a crime she was only arrested for in 2023.
We even saw his B&B character in flashbacks last year when Sheila confessed to Bill that she killed a man with bees, as Adam’s character was allergic to the insects.
Growing Up Loving TV
Adam grew up in Islip, NY on Long Island and started doing theater in high school. He was also a TV and pop culture fiend and that helped him want to be in the entertainment business. That’s also when he started writing scripts for all his favorite TV shows. At family gatherings, he acted out scripts with his cousins.
Eventually, he realized he needed training and studied acting at SUNY Binghamton, part of the New York State university system.
Loving Soaps
After appearing on B&B, watching soaps off and on for years, and joining GH, Adam has enormous respect for the genre from the writing and directing to the acting. He’s loving getting to play Nikolas’s layers when other genres didn’t allow him to have such a wide variety of emotional scenes.
However, both Steve and Adam admit there was once a stigma to working on a soap opera. Steve didn’t even want to audition for soaps back in the late 1980s but is glad he did now.
Woking on GH as Nikolas allows Adam to use his acting instincts better than other roles. It’s also helping him work on an indie film.
Making His Way To LA
After college, Adam eventually decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue his career because the weather was great and he had better job opportunities.
He had a writer friend who invited him to stay with her and that’s how his Hollywood career began. He gave himself six months to succeed, but 23 years later, he is still there. However, he worked on the series Power New York for three years and would travel back and forth between LA and Brooklyn.
Finally Landing Nikolas
Steve, Brad, and Adam discuss nervousness when landing a new role, with Adam admitting he had no time for nerves when he got the call to play Nikolas with such short notice.
He believed it would just be 10 episodes to wrap up Nik’s story arc, so he just gave it his all and didn’t hold back. That performance then ended up endearing him to fans. However, the fear was back when he got the call to play Nikolas again a few months later.
Adam understands how loyal soap fans are to both the show, the character, and the actor, so he was prepared for fan reaction either negative or positive.
Thanks to YouTube, Adam is able to watch both Marcus Coloma and the late Tyler Christopher play Nikolas, which helps him embody the character.
Adam is enjoying his current stint where he feels they are now writing a redemption arc for Nikolas. He also loves the fan reaction.
Working With Baby Ace
Adam has had to work with kids before but has nothing but rave reviews for the twin boys playing Ace. He says that Joey and Jay Clay are so phenomenal that they deserve Daytime Emmys.
He describes the scene when Nikolas first meets his son Ace and how amazing Joey Clay was by reaching for him, putting his head on his shoulder, and falling asleep.
