Quartermaine Thanksgiving Talk
Both Steve and Bradford had pleasant Thanksgivings at home, but were reminded of on-screen soap holidays. Bradford knows one word is associated with General Hospital at Thanksgiving and that’s “pizza.”
Steve explains how pizza is a Quartermaine family tradition, but he was playing Jason Q for a few years before pizza became the running gag on the show for the last 30 years. He just doesn’t remember them, but he does remember having fun on the set during big family scenes.
Bradford just watched the first pizza Thanksgiving episode that aired way back in 1994. He was impressed with Steve’s preppy Jason sweater when Jason hadn’t yet become a mob enforcer. He was even holding a duck, as those were the days of Lucy’s (Lynn Herring) duck Sigmund.
All About Reginald
Reginald the Butler was even there ready to cook Lucy’s duck and Bradford comments that he could have been a character on the old 80s sitcom Perfect Strangers.
Steve explains that Stephen Kay, who played Reginald, is now a big-time director who just directed an episode of Yellowstone. He has also directed some films, including Get Carter with Sylvester Stallone. Back in the Steve and Kay played video games together.
Back To The First Pizza Thanksgiving
Lucy didn’t just have Sigmund in that first 1994 pizza episode. She also had a long monologue in which she made the whole Q clan feel uncomfortable. Steve is highly impressed with Lucy “holding court” and figures it’s why the powers that be gave her the Nurses’ Ball.
Bradford was impressed with how well-behaved the duck was with so many actors passing it around. The Qs argued as always, but Lila put a stop to things explaining how privileged everyone was and how they should be thankful. Then, Annabelle ate the turkey, and a tradition was born –including the singing of We Gather Together, which is still sung to this day at every Q Pizza Day.
Through The Years With The Holiday Qs
Bradford reminisces about Cook, the Q cook who was never seen but ruled the kitchen roost and would never let a family member in. These days, we always see the Qs in a very small kitchen cooking for themselves, which feels so unusual.
Steve and Bradford go on to discuss more Reginald, a butler involved with some fascinating stories. He even dated Corinthos nanny Leticia (related to current nanny Pilar) and tried to poison Katherine Bell way back when. When Reginald took a fall, Dobson, aka Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), became his temp replacement. Reginald himself replaced his uncle, Jennings.
Do YOU Want A Butler?
Steve wondered if Bradford would want a butler like Reginald if they ever had the kind of money that the Qs have, but Bradford didn’t think so. They weren’t even sure what a butler really did but Bradford thought Downton Abbey gave them a clue — a butler is the head of the household.
A butler is also similar to a personal assistant, but Bradford admits he is not a great delegator and prefers to do things himself.
Back To Pizza Day
They circle back to the first Q pizza Thanksgiving, where Bradford points out that Cook helped perfect and crisp the pizza before they ate.
In 1995, Cook made a duck, but Lucy is there and can’t handle the idea of eating duck. She even gives a passionate speech about the travesty of eating duck, so they end up ordering a pizza.
By 1996, AJ (Sean Kanan) ruined the pizza after Cook resigned because AJ dared to make a PB&J sandwich in her kitchen.
One year, Tracy (Jane Elliot) even hired three thieves dressed as pilgrims to ruin the holiday, but Emily (Natalia Livingston) walked in and warned them that they better watch out because her brother was Jason Morgan.
Jason’s Motorcycle Entrance
Steve mentions one of Jason’s biggest moments soon after becoming Jason Morgan when he rode a dirt bike/motorcycle into the Quartermaine living room to show them he wasn’t Jason Q anymore. He even lived in a box car at the time. As Steve described him, “a little brain damaged, living in a box car, and doing valet work for Sonny Corinthos.” What a catch!
More Q Disasters
Bradford goes over several more years of ruined Quartermaine Thanksgivings. At one point Edward bought a double oven and another year Monica hired a gourmet chef who Cook kicked out of the kitchen. AJ even saved the day with pizza.
An Incident With Annabelle
Steve explains how he used to park in what is known as the studio’s B parking lot when he first landed the role of Jason. He wasn’t contract at the time, so that was the lot for him and he just continued parking there after becoming a contract player.
One day, after he made it to the more coveted A lot, he was ready to tape the Thanksgiving show and noticed a van in his spot. He was indignant that someone was in his spot, but later learned it was the original Annabelle (as there have been so many).
For Steve, every holiday episode was tons of fun because of all the winter decor they didn’t get to see in LA, as well as the family camaraderie on set.
