During Thursday night’s (May 16) three-hour soap-tinged Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C) fundraising extravaganza, actress Kim Zimmer (ex-Echo DiSavoy, One Life to Live; ex-Reva Shayne Lewis, Guiding Light et al.) confided her own ongoing battle with the disease.

Kim Zimmer Gets Real About Real-Life Cancer Diagnosis

During a segment in which she and former costar Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines, GL) detailed how their respective characters navigated their cancer journey, an emotional Zimmer opened up and revealed, “”I was diagnosed with breast cancer on November 6, and if it wasn’t for a wonderful circle of friends that I have, not to mention my husband, A.C. Weary, and my family— Rachel, Max, and Jake— who call me every day, I would have fallen apart. I did a mastectomy, and I have my last infusion on Tuesday.”

The wickedly-witted raconteur then quipped, “I have really nice C’s instead of droopy D’s. I think that’s going to be the name of my [next] book.”

Though granting she’s “a tough broad,” Zimmer hastened to add that, “if I didn’t have the friends that I have, the support system that I have, the fabulous doctors, and a fantastic plastic surgeon, I would have fallen apart.”

If you gleam one salient point from Zimmer’s story, she hopes it’s this: “Early detection, early detection, early detection, early detection. Get your mammograms, get them soon.”
