The Daytime Emmys is poised for a full circle moment this week as All My Children legend Susan Lucci receives the Lifetime Achievement Daytime Emmy Award — presented by none other than The Young and the Restless alum Shemar Moore.
The Daytime Emmys Go Back To 1999
In the late 90s, Susan Lucci’s consecutive Daytime Emmy losses were legendary. By 1999, she had been nominated a whopping 19 times with 18 losses, but in June of that year, the losses came to an end, with Moore excitedly presenting the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress.
When he opened the envelope and saw Lucci’s name, Moore spontaneously shouted out “The streak is over” in an electrifying moment that had the audience at New York’s famed Radio City Music Hall on its feet within seconds.
According to PEOPLE, the academy plans to re-create that moment on December 15 when Moore gives Lucci, age 78, her second Daytime Emmy, this time for a lifetime of achievement in the soap opera genre.
Susan Lucci Gets Her Due At Postponed Emmys
“I am truly humbled to receive this esteemed award from the Academy,” Lucci said in a statement when she first learned of this year’s award. “Throughout my career, I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside exceptional talents and embraced by my fans that have been with me every step of the way. This honor is not just a reflection of my journey, but a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the profound connection we are so lucky to forge with audiences all over the world through television.”
Sadly, the Daytime Emmys had to be postponed from June of this year till December thanks to the Writers Guild of America strike that affected both film and television productions for months. While soaps continued production with non-union writers, some award shows didn’t happen as planned, including the Daytime Emmys.
Lucci, who played Erica Kane on All My Children for the entire 41-year run of the legendary soap has been an outspoken advocate for women’s heart health after undergoing two heart surgeries in the last two years.
The 50th annual Daytime Emmys will air Friday night on CBS at 9 PM EST. You can see the video of Lucci’s 1999 win below.
