The Young and the Restless’ Eric Braeden was diagnosed with bladder cancer late last year. Thanks to a specialized treatment and, most importantly of all, early detection, the Victor Newman actor is currently in remission. Braeden recently sat down with KCAL-TV’s Pat Harvey to talk about his battle with the dreaded disease as well as his early life and career.
Eric Braeden On KCAL-TV
Though well used to being the television star that adoring fans thrill to meet in person, the show was on the other foot as Braeden sat down with Harvey. “My wife and I watch you every night,” he mused. “It’s so strange, isn’t it, when one is almost in intimate contact with someone that one has seen on television for years and years.”
At the top of the interview, Harvey had a most pressing question: Does Eric Braeden like Victor? Braeden cheekily maintained that he did…even if he wouldn’t resort to his alter-ego’s brutal tactics (like imprisoning his wife’s lover in a dungeon.). And, Victor’s millions don’t hurt. Braeden particularly likes the money.
A reminiscence on growing up in Germany during the thick of World War II — which Braeden termed “a good upbringing, but tough” — segued into his fight against bladder cancer, the same ailment that cost his brother his own bladder eleven years earlier. “He discovered cancer too late,” explained Braeden, adding “and it penetrated the muscle wall of the bladder.”
Braeden’s cancer was treated with a drug called BCG, originally developed to fight tuberculous. According to the actor, listening to one’s body, and early detection, is vital. “As a man, we are used to saying, ‘Oh, to hell with it.’ With me, it had to get so bad that I literally could not pee. Have it examined early.”
As for his opinions on fame and all that entails? “We want to make an impact. We want to know that we’ve made a difference”
