It’s been quite some time since Thaao Penghlis graced the Days of our Lives stage and fans have taken notice. Where is Tony? Where is Anna? What has come of the fan-favorite couple? This week, the actor spoke out and gave the inside scoop on his soap status. Sadly, it’s not what viewers want to hear.
Goodbye, Tony
Penghlis recently sat down with Soap Opera News to discuss his cookbooks, his new podcast, and most importantly, where he stands with the show and his famed character, Tony. During this interview, he dropped a major bomb that had our jaws on the floor. While talking about his roles on daytime playing baddies, goodies, and everything in between, he opened up about where he sees his life when it comes to acting. “I’m meant to do other things now. You know, I’m moving on. Sometimes you have to be pushed out of the door in order to refresh yourself.”
He went on to remark that he’s shutting that door once and for all. “No, I’m leaving the soap world. There are changes happening that I can’t discuss right now. It feels like it’s coming from somewhere else, maybe with a different writer. When people start taking you for granted, you change. I love where I am now. It’s a sort of awakening.”
Leaving isn’t easy, which is something Penghlis is all too familiar with. He’s taken both Tony and Andre off and back on the screen time and time again. None of this is easy on him or the viewers. “You know, I think it’s important to be true to yourself. When you leave something behind, it can feel like a big change. It’s like letting go of the familiar and venturing into something new. And when you return, it’s not the same as before. The fans may not be happy, but at the end of the day, creators need to follow their own path.”
It seems Tony and Anna are no more. When asked if they’ve already made their final appearances, Penghlis confirmed that’s true. “Yes. The fans really like Anna and Tony because they bring humor, charm, and romance to the show. People love seeing long-term relationships like Bill and Susan Hayes. But things are changing with new characters and budget constraints. Some characters are not there anymore. It’s time to move on and appreciate the time that’s been spent.”
