When Sloan Petersen first arrived on the Salem scene she was a confident and take-no-prisoners attorney who took pride in her career and her sexuality. She never seemed like a woman who would do anything to hold onto a man and certainly never seemed like the mother type.
Sloan Got Desperate
Sloan admitted to Melinda Trask that she became attached to Eric Brady because he was the best sex she ever had. That sexual attachment seemed to grow into love, but then that love turned into desperation when Sloan discovered Eric’s ex Nicole was pregnant. She did everything she could to make sure Nicole never learned Eric was the father of her child and not EJ, while deciding to give Eric a child herself.
After a pregnancy turned into a miscarriage that came with the news that Sloan couldn’t carry children, she and Eric decided to adopt. While we might buy that Sloan’s newfound desperate need for a child came from her realizing how much she wanted one when she first became pregnant if she wasn’t also switching every DNA test Nicole had run on her baby.
Then, as we know, Sloan jumped the shark and decided to just keep Nicole’s baby as her own when he landed on her doorstep via Dimitri von Leuchner and an unfortunate turn of events surrounding Nicole’s labor.
DAYS’ Sloan Petersen Can Be Vulnerable, But…
When Sloan made that split-second decision to present Eric with this baby she knew belonged to him and Nicole, she lost all sympathy from the audience but thanks to one drunken dinner party we know Sloan can still be a vulnerable character whose actions stem from an extreme lack of self-confidence.
That was on full display as Sloan got drunk to ease her into hosting a dinner party for John and the “intimidating” Marlena. Watching drunk Sloan stumble through the night and then end up in bed practically sobbing almost made us feel bad for her until we remembered one thing. She stole Nicole’s baby and is acting like this is perfectly ok while seemingly convincing herself she really did adopt a random baby.
Sloan actions are unforgivable (until a redemption arc, of course), so no matter how endearing she was in front of John and Marlena, she now has ‘babynapper’ on her resume and that’s a character problem for the moment.
