Few General Hospital couples have been married as many times as the pair known as ‘Carson’ — aka Carly and Sonny. They have married due to pregnancies, love, and to keep the other out of jail, but it never seems to last. And maybe, there is a good reason for that.
Carly And Sonny Can Never Keep It Together
GH fans have watched Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) spend decades in and out of each other’s lives. They raised children among the criminality and chaos and loved and married others through the years. They even seemed to be happier with others, while acting more at ease and like themselves. When together, many argue that they are toxic, constantly screaming at one another, bringing each other to tears and even cheating on one another.
In fact, Carly has walked in on Sonny in bed with other women multiple times, but for some reason, she kept going back for more until recently. Heck, when they attempted divorce a few years ago, Sonny even slept with Carly’s divorce lawyer while Carly had a romp in the sack with ex-husband Jax (Ingo Rademacher), who she always seemed more suited for anyway.
Yes, Carly mourned Sonny when he was presumed dead living the life of cowboy Mike in Nixon Falls, PA, but she was ready to marry Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and consummate that marriage within months. Heck, Carly and Jason even oddly admitted they’d always been in love with each other and now was their time. (We’re sure Sam McCall would like to have a word with both of them about that.)
If Sonny had never returned from Nixon Falls, Carly would be married to Jason right now. And, if Jason hadn’t been buried under the rubble (but will be returning soon), who knows what the last two years could have brought for Carly?
Carly And Sonny Are There For One Another
After all these years and all those marriages, Carly and Sonny should still be there for each other and a part of one another’s lives. They just shouldn’t be married, but in today’s scenes at Kelly’s when Sonny comforted Carly over the loss of Bobbie (Jacklyn Zeman), we saw that they still have a connection, as they should. After all, they share children together.
Their friendship is deep, but that’s as far as things should go with this pair. They need to support one another, but also continue to call each other out when they do something wrong. That’s exactly what Sonny did when he learned that Carly kept the truth from Nina (Cynthia Watros) about Willow (Katelyn MacMullen). In fact, he was the only person she cared about to take her to task for that for more than five minutes.
In the end, Sonny and Carly no longer work as a romantic pairing, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t still be a part of each other’s lives.
