This week’s General Hospital recap for January 8-12, 2024, details one of the most emotional weeks in Port Charles and GH history as characters, actors, and fans said goodbye to Bobbie Spencer and Jacklyn Zeman — with a heartwarming surprise that brought us all to tears.
Carly Mourns Her Mother
Carly (Laura Wright) tried to put aside her anger at Nina (Cynthia Watros) to focus on honoring her late mother in beautiful and poignant ways. She spent some one-on-one time with Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) as Liz recalled how much Bobbie (Jacklyn Zeman) influenced and helped her. But once she was alone, Sonny appeared after being released on bail for beating Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober).
A Memorial To Remember
On the day of the memorial, Carly was surprised to receive a text from Elizabeth. She learned that a storm knocked down the Kelly’s sign and it was broken in half. Carly asked Liz to paint a new sign and she was happy to oblige.
Carly and her kids greeted Lucas (Ryan Carnes) next, who was back in town to say goodbye to his mother. They left for the chapel where they met up with people who had loved Bobbie through the years. Lucy (Lynn Herring) and Tracy (Jane Elliot) put their animosity and feud aside for the day and Laura had to comfort a distraught Scott (Kin Shriner).
Maxie (Kirsten Storms) and Felicia (Kristina Wagner) only had BJ on the mind and with good reason. They visited her grave the day before and recalled how Bobbie and Tony (Brad Maule) agreed to give their late daughter’s heart to her cousin Maxie, which was the only reason Maxie was still alive today.
Maxie also spotted a mysterious stranger at the memorial and introduced herself. She learned the stranger was a reporter named Angela Brighton (Brighton Hertford) who had been working on a story with Bobbie in Amsterdam. It turned out that Bobbie’s final mission in life was to help young women who were being trafficked for sex, as she was as a teenager in Florida many years ago.
A Whirlwind Adventure
Learning that Bobbie had a contact in Amsterdam and was trying to save one particular girl, Carly and Felicia decided to fly there and complete Bobbie’s mission. In record time, they got to Amsterdam, learned that Bobbie had smuggled a girl to a remote Canadian cabin, flew to Canada, were in a car accident, and found the girl in the cabin so they could get her to safety.
They then made their way back to Port Charles all in the same episode. When Elizabeth treated Carly’s head gash at the hospital, Carly asked her to change how she was going to paint the new sign for her diner.
A Bright Angel From Above
While Carly and Felicia were in Amsterdam, Maxie took her new reporter friend on a journey through Bobbie’s life. Maxie felt a special connection to this reporter and invited various Port Charles citizens to Kelly’s where they told stories of how much Bobbie meant to them.
Laura relayed how she and Bobbie fought over Scott back in the late 1970s and Scott recalled when he asked Bobbie to marry him just a few short years ago. Elizabeth told the reporter how Bobbie helped her after she was raped as a teen, inspiring her to help people and become a nurse.
Lucas even mentioned how his father used to call him ‘Champ’ so his sister would call her the same until she sadly died at just eight years old. Finally, Angela said she had enough for her story and needed to return home.
When Lucas spotted her outside Kelly’s alone, he surprised her when she called him ‘Champ’ as he walked away. When he turned around, Angela had vanished.
Maxie was also looking for Angela to thank her for everything, but her business card seemed to disappear. When outside Maxie’s door, Felicia called the Associated Press office in Amsterdam and learned no such person existed. She then remembered a moment holding young BJ and recalled Angela’s face. Immediately, she knew that this reporter was an angel from above, BJ back in their lives to help give them closure.
As she tearfully called out “It’s Barbara Jean” fans were reminded of the moment she said, “Not Barbara Jean” upon learning that it was BJ’s heart that would save Maxie.
Inside, Maxie was surprised when she couldn’t even find any mention of Angela on the internet and then it hit her. She touched her heart and knew she had just been reunited with BJ. Felicia walked in and mother and daughter hugged as they absorbed the enormity of what happened.
Back at Kelly’s, Carly hung up the new sign Elizabeth painted. It read “Bobbie’s” as Kelly’s took on a new name and a new era. And, there wasn’t a dry eye in living rooms, offices, and TV rooms across the fandom as we witnessed the end of an era and the start of something new.
